Scythe & Sickle Harvest Ale - Cooperstown, New York - 5.8 ABV
by Derek Brewlander | November 8th, 2012
It was tough to pick which beer I was going to review this week after trying so many outstanding beers at Depot Liquors' winter beer tasting. Finally, I settled on Ommegang's Scythe & Sickle Harvest Ale. Don't be fooled by the "Harvest", this is not an Oktoberfest style beer, but more of an Amber Ale/Biere de Garde(which it is technically classified as) and it is outstanding. Let us get right into the review: It pours a slightly opaque deep golden amber, with a lot of rising carbonation and a large foam head. It leaves great lacing on the glass upon drinking. The aroma is sweet, complex, and full of spice. You get the nice sweet and toasty malty aroma with a touch of fruitiness, rye and a hint of floral hops. It is a very earthy smell. The flavor is outstanding – sweet and complex just like the aroma. You get the malty sweetness first, with some fruity citrus notes, a touch of bitter hops, and some earthy grains and yeast. Earthy is the best way to describe it and it has that little bit of alcohol flavor to it which is great in this style of beer. The touch of hops does a great job keeping the flavors nice and balanced. The mouthfeel is dry and smooth; it is moderate bodied with a high level of carbonation. Overall this is just an outstanding beer. Ommegang never ceases to impress me with ALL of their craft beers, and while some are difficult to find, Depot Liquors carries A LOT of them! In fact, I made their mixed pack my official 12 pack of the month even though it is actually an 8 pack. Ommegang has always been one of my favorites, if you haven't heard of it and are a fan of beer AT ALL, get down here and grab a mixed pack from them and treat yourself. Scythe & Sickle is just one of several great beers included in it. Cheers!
