Banana Bread Beer - Bedford, United Kingdom - 5.2% ABV

This imported British fruit brewed beer is an interesting one. I have heard a long range of opinions on this particular beer, some loving it and others hating it. The main point I think though is that when you buy a beer with “Banana Bread” in the title, you should know what you’re getting into – a fruit beer. Fruit beers are usually going to be sweet and (obviously) fruity! Now this is tough to balance because you don’t want your beer to be TOO sweet and you want it to be able to properly balance those fruit flavors in with the beer flavors. It needs to be a good blend or else it misses the mark, which is the reason you have to sort of review fruit beers a little different – more how well do they do blending their fruit flavor into the beer and whether or not it hits the mark incorporating that particular flavor. So how did these guys do? To start, it pours a crisp clear copper color, with a couple finger off white/light tan head that recedes to a light ring in about a minute. It actually has very solid lacing. The aroma is very pleasant. You definitely get the strong banana scent and it really does smell delicious. Very enticing, though it sort of drowns out a lot of malts and other faint scents(some nice earthy malts with a touch of caramel and slight hops). The taste certainly hits the mark as far as been an effective banana beer. The banana flavor is what you get the most of, it is not overwhelming and is very tasty yet does push the slight hop flavor and the base malts deep into the background. It literally tastes like the name implies, you get the banana and some toasty bread notes – again very affective, my only gripe being that the flavor seems slightly one dimensional and the finish has a touch of tartness. The mouthfeel is smooth to start, but finishes a little thick and muddled – not so much to make the experience offsetting though. All in all this is a very interesting beer. It is a great dessert beer, and simply put, it does what it is supposed to. It is a banana bread flavor beer with good banana bread flavor, and there aren't many of those around(it is the only banana beer I have had.) Ultimately if you like bananas and banana bread, you certainly will not be disappointed. So come down to Depot Liquors and grab a bottle, it's like banana bread except it's alcoholic, and what could be better than that?! Cheers!
